Training Programme for Kaule Residents in Earthquake Resistant Traditional Re-construction 

From Oct 27 to Nov 1st, at Kaule School Meeting Room - all are welcome 

A six day hands-on training and workshop for the villages of Kaule and Bhangeri. The villagers will be made aware of the properties of traditional materials and techniques used in traditional construction - bamboo, stone, mud, and timber - and would be empowered to use these in ways that would make their structures seismically less vulnerable. 

The modules planned for the workshop are as follows:

Day 1

Morning session: WHAT IS BAMBOO

WHERE DOES IT GROW, WHY BAMBOO FOR CONSTRUCTION, WHY DOES BAMBOO NEED TEATMENT, WHAT ARE THE KINDS OF TREATMENTS, WHAT ARE THE PREPARATIONS REQUIRED FOR TREATMENT, DEMONSTRATION OF DIP TREATMENT, FOLLOWED BY A GROUP DISCUSSION 

Afternoon session: BAMBOO TREATMENT

PREPARATIONS REQUIRED FOR TREATMENT, DEMONSTRATE DIP TREATMENT, FOLLOWED BY A GROUP DISCUSSION

Day 2 

Morning session: WORKING WITH BAMBOO

OBSERVATIONS ON STRAIGHTNESS, USABLE LENGTHS, DIA, THICKNESS OF WALLS, IMPORTANCE OF CENTRE OF GRAVITY ON STRUCTURE FORMATION, NODES, FIBRES, DEFECTS, SURFACE CHARACTERISTICS AND IMPORTANCE,DO'S AND DONT'S, FOLLOWED BY A GROUP DISCUSSION

Afternoon session: BAMBOO JOINERY

TOOLS USED -  HAND OR POWER TOOLS, JOINING BAMBOO - SURFACE TO SURFACE Vs POINT TO POINT, ANGLE JOINTS, VISUALISING JOINERY, FIXING MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT, NUTS, BOLTS, BAMBOO PINS, LASHINGS WITH ROPE, FITA, ND THEIR COBINATIONS. VIDEO AND SLIDES PRESENTATIONS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A GROUP DISCUSSION

Day 3

Morning session: BAMBOO JOINERY

CUTTING BAMBOO, SPLITTING BAMBOO IN 2,4,6, ETC. CLEANING SPLIT BAMBOO, MAKING BAMBOO PINS, MAKING FISH MOUTH JOINTS, TONGUE AND GROOVE, MORTISE AND TENON JOINTS, FOLLOWED BY A GROUP DISCUSSION

Afternoon session: BAMBOO AND TIMBER JOINERY

MAKING  +, X, T AND L JOINTS, JOINING ROUND BAMBOO - HALF SPLIT AND, MULTIPLE SPLIT BAMBOO, WAFFLES AND WALLING PANELS, FIXING WALL PANELS, FIXING BAMBOO TO TIMBER, STONE, AND MUD, USE OF CUSTOM MADE HARDWARE, BAMBOO AS REINFORCEMENT, FOLLOWED BY A GROUP DISCUSSION

Day 4

Morning session: STONE MASONRY

UNDERSTANDFING STONE AS A BUILDING MATERIAL, STONE MASONRY AND EARTHQUAKE, SIZE OF STONE, TYPES OF STOME MASONRY - DRY AND WET, USE OF KEYS FOR STABILITY, SIZE OF STONES, CORNER STONES, GROUP DISCUSSION

Afternoon session: MUD MORTAR

TYPES OF MORTAR, CEMENT, LIME, MUD, RAW MATERIALS, CHOOSING THE RIGHT MORTAR, PRACTICAL MORTAR PREPARATION, STABILIZERS, MORTAR MIXES, PROPORTIONS, CONSISTENCY, FOLLOWED BY A GROUP DISCUSSION

Day 5

Morning session: MUD PLASTER

TYPES OF PLASTER, CEMENT, LIME, MUD, RAW MATERIALS, CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLASTER, PRACTICAL PLASTER APPLICATION, STABILIZERS, PLASTER MIXES, PROPORTIONS, CONSISTENCY, APPLICATION BY HAND AND BY TOOLS,        GROUP DISCUSSION

Afternoon session: WRAPPING UP SESSION

WRAPPING UP AND RECALL OF EARLIER SESSIONS, CRITICAL POINTS SUMMARY, QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS, GROUP PHOTOS. REMOVING AND STACKING OF TREATED BAMBOO FROM SOAKING PIT FOR DRYING. FOLLOWED BY A GROUP DISCUSSION.

Day 6

Morning session: CONCLUDING SESSION - ART IN KAULE AND BHANGERI

A WORKSHOP CONDUCTED BY OUR RESIDENT ARTIST TO EXPLORE AND EXHIBIT ART FORMS THAT THRIVE IN THE DAY-TO-DAY KAULE - A FORCE THAT COEXISTS WITH THE TRIBULATIONS AND HARDSHIP IMPOSED BY THE EARTHQUAKE, AND TRIUMPHS.
